California: Surveillance Tech Transparency Must Move Forward

Missing

The California Assembly Public Safety Committee on Tuesday will vote on whether law enforcement must go through an open, public process before adopting new surveillance technology.

Tweet at the committee members that California needs transparency urgently to ensure accountability for privacy and spending.

The legislation would ensure that before law enforcement can acquire new surveillance technology they must submit a policy for approval to a governing body. Then, these agencies must periodically provide hard data about how they used the technology so our elected officials can decide whether the purchases are proportionate to the public safety need.

The community and our representatives must be involved in decisions that could impact our privacy and public safety. Tell these assemblymembers to vote “aye” on S.B. 21 this Tuesday.

We won!

S.B. 21 passed the Assembly Public Safety committee on a 4-2 vote. It now goes to the Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection.
